Quite the opposite, it has to do with boasting and bragging. I spent Christmas day with Lindsey and her sweetie, Justin. These photos will convince you that Lindsey has talents that go way beyond what you see her doing with paper. We enjoyed a leisurely breakfast of gingerbread pancakes with a creamy spiced rum sauce, blue flannel hash (blue potatoes and tempeh), and peach mimosas. I should have had my camera out, but I just wasn't awake enough yet.

We shared gifts and watched a movie, then it was time for snacks. Baked spinach and artichoke dip along with wild mushroom and pine nut phyllo baskets. By the time I remembered to grab the camera, the dip was gone. I only managed to get a shot of an extra phyllo basket sitting in the kitchen.

Another movie and a game later and it was time for dinner. Stuffed hazelnut cranberry roast encroute with apples and crystalized ginger; mushroom gravy; carmelized onions and butternut squash roasted with chestnuts; individual cauliflower and asparagus tarts; with a fruited nut bread. Dinner was followed by a flight of deserts. Apple galettes, richer than Ft. Knox chocolate cake with sugared cranberries and fresh mint, and a cinnamon creme brulee with a fresh black raspberry. The photo doesn't do that individual desert tray justice. The cake had a fudge inner layer with a chocolate shell on the outside. It. was. to. die. for.

And all vegan. That girl has to open a restaurant someday.

SNEAK PEEK! This folio style mini album will be available in our Projects To Go category in the new year.

All Tagged and Filed Mini Album

Join us and create this folio style mini album from scratch! Each folio contains 6 pockets and 6- 5"x7" tags, tabbed with ribbons. Learn the easy technique and use the formula to create other folios; gift certificate folios, gift card pockets, brag books for school photos. Album is 8" high and 6" wide, featuring expandable pockets. Display your full size photos on the tags. We'll use acid-free matboard, cardstock and patterned papers. We'll embellish the project with flowers, jumbo brads, buttons and ribbons. This project will be available in a variety of colors/patterns.

Please bring with you: basic supplies on list plus sharp micro tip scissors to trim detail and ribbon edges, paper piercer, glue stick and glue dots. (There are glue sticks available in the Pioneer Photo Albums booth) We will complete the Mini Album to the "ready for photos" stage. If you'd like, bring 6-12 4"x6" photos to complete the project.

Like all Awesome Albums classes, this is a beginner friendly class. Feel free to bring a friend who could use a day out or is interested in paper crafting. We'll make sure they leave with a finished project. Everyone leaves with a coupon to save on "projects to go" in our booth.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://livingawesome.blogspot.com/2008/12/sneak-peek-all-tagged-and-filed-mini.html' title='SNEAK PEEK! This will be the first time we have used the accordion style in a class for CKC. Our acrylic classes generally fill quick, so don't wait too long if you want to be in this new one.

Stand Up For Acrylic!

Looking for a new twist on accordion display albums? Join us as we use our Clearly Visible accordion acrylic album to create this display piece with that clear acrylic appeal. The album panels are aprox. 5"x7" and there are 5 sturdy panels in this display for a total length of 25". Embellish the panels with patterned papers, flowers, buttons, acrylic paint, golden threads, ric rac , lace, chipboard and ribbons. This accordion album looks great folded up and tied with ribbon, or displayed on a table or ledge.

Please bring with you: basic supplies on list plus mini glue dots and sharp micro tip scissors. We will complete the album to the "ready for photos" stage. If you wish, you can bring 5-10 photos with you to use as you go. The panels look best with photos that are aprox. 3.5"x5.5". Just a smidge trimmed off 4"x6" prints to show off the patterned papers and let the clear acrylic background shine.

Like all Awesome Albums classes, this is a beginner friendly class. Feel free to bring a friend who could use a day out or is interested in paper crafting. We'll make sure they leave with a finished project. Everyone leaves with a coupon to save on our Clearly Visible acrylic albums or acrylic kits in our booth.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://livingawesome.blogspot.com/2008/12/sneak-peek-stand-up-for-acrylic-class.html' title='SNEAK PEEK! We'll use patterned papers, golden fibers, ribbons, chipboard accents, flowers, buttons, acrylic paint, filmstrips and a tag to embellish these pages. This project is mostly black/cream with a little mimosa yellow thrown in to add some punch. The pages would look fabuous with your black and white photos, or your full color ones. Learn an easy technique to prevent the pages from rubbing and wearing as you twist the album open for viewing.

Please bring with you: basic supplies on list plus stapler, glue dots, and a white, silver or gold pen if you'd like to add journaling as you work. Everyone leaves with a coupon to save on our rotary files, file pages and altered file kits in our booth.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://livingawesome.blogspot.com/2008/12/sneak-peek-desktop-photos-and-more-file.html' title='SNEAK PEEK! This uses an accordion display pack that will be available in our "Projects To Go" category next year.

Creativity on Display

Join us and express your creative style with this embellished accordion style frame. Tallest panel is 8" high, length is 24" with 5 sturdy pieces, giving you 5 "frame" panels to display your photos. We'll use twine, corrugated cardboard, black elastic, ribbons, chipboard accents, flowers, buttons, acrylic paint, filmstrips and a printed clock face to embellish the panels. This project is mostly black with some metallic turquoise, metallic rose and mimosa yellow thrown in brighten things up. This photo display would look fabuous with either black and white photos or full color ones. Work with lots of mixed media as we create this fun piece of home decor. Learn to use embellishments, so that you can slide photos in and out of this frame.

Please bring with you: basic supplies on list plus sharp micro tip scissors to trim detail and ribbon edges, and glue dots. We will complete all the frame panels to the "ready for photos" stage. If you'd like, bring 5 photos to complete the frame. One should be 4.5"x6.5" or 4"x6". Two should be about 3.5" x 5.5". Another two should be about 3"x5". You can also mat the photos with cardstock to make them the desired size.

Like all Awesome Albums classes, this is a beginner friendly class. Feel free to bring a friend who could use a day out or is interested in paper crafting. We'll make sure they leave with a finished project. Everyone leaves with a coupon to save on "projects to go" in our booth.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://livingawesome.blogspot.com/2008/12/sneak-peek-creativity-on-display-class.html' title='SNEAK PEEK! It's called "Just 2 Easy Acrylic Album". Our acrylic classes fill quick, so if we are coming to a convention near you- don't wait too long.

Just 2 Easy Acrylic Albums

Fascinated by the new acrylic albums, but afraid it will be too complicated? This is the class for you. Join with Awesome Albums as we create an acrylic album featuring layered pages. Our Clearly Visible album is aprox. 5"x6" and has 5 sturdy acrylic pieces. We'll discuss easy tips to speed building the layouts. Embellish the pages using transparency pieces, flowers, buttons, acrylic paint, ric rac , chipboard and ribbons. Once you know the secrets, you can create these popular albums for yourself and gifts in no time at all.

Please bring with you: basic supplies on list plus mini glue dots, a standard hole punch, and sharp micro tip scissors. We will complete the album to the "ready for photos" stage. The pages will accomodate various sizes of photos, so it will be best to select the photos with your album in hand.

Like all Awesome Albums classes, this is a beginner friendly class. Feel free to bring a friend who could use a day out or is interested in paper crafting. We'll make sure they leave with a finished project. We have increased the mini filmstrip name collection that we began this year. This brings us up to over 1050 names in the smaller format. While statistics have a lot to do with the names we add, we also consider the many requests that we collect throughout the convention circut. If you were missing a name that wasn't available, you'll want to check the new listings in the shop. Many of the newer names will not have the images online at this time, but being the creative types that you are, I'm sure you'll be able to use the existing images to imagine the new ones. Thank you for your patience on this.

We do still have the custom option available for filmstrips in both formats, in case your name is too unique for us to produce in bulk.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://livingawesome.blogspot.com/2008/12/asher-colton-kobe-sasha-and.html' title='NEW! Seriously. This year the rain out did itself and there was flooding. Fortunately for me, I had plenty of work to get done in the hotel and there was a Taco Bell drive through right next door. Let's just say that I became very familiar with their new nachos in a bowl concept. I know, not exactly the sort of restaurant you read this blog for. Admittedly, the term restaurant is even used loosely there. The convenience factor during a flood can't be overlooked.

I love the Chow restaurant group. Especially the Five Spot Diner. I love the Pike Place Market. I love the Tom Douglas restaurants. Here's hoping that next year will be drier, there will be less work to catch up on and I'll be able to indulge again. Maybe I'll even get rid of a few pounds so I can indulge again guilt-free. One can always hope.

St. Paul means Izzy's to me.

I am so glad that Creating Keepsakes picked up an event in St. Paul. We've participated in the events Midwest Scrapbooking Association has promoted in the past, and well, I am so hooked on Izzy's. A couple years ago, the food network featured a Bobby Flay throwdown with a St. Paul ice creamery. The timing couldn't have been better. We were listening to the tv show as we packed to leave for St. Paul. We weren't the only ones that were watching the tv as we packed. Dave from Scrapbook Memories had mapquested the directions as well. It was as good as the hype. A tiny operation really, but quality and flavors that are tough to beat. Dark Chocolate Zin. Salted Carmel. Hot Brown Sugar. Norwegian Chai. Mexican Chocolate Fiesta. Almond Biscotti. Marshberry and Cash. See what I mean? When in St. Paul, you MUST do Izzy's.

Going Wild in Kansas City

Indigo Wild, kind of wild. I don't know if it was the economy or the proximity to Manchester, but the event just wasn't well attended. That's a shame. The people we met were friendly, and we look forward to seeing them next year in Manchester. The management at the downtown Sheraton were gracious and accomodating when we had a problem, as were the staff at the Crowne Plaza that we were relocated to.

The very next week, Creating Keepsakes was holding the Kansas City event. Fortunately, this meant I'd be driving right past Brooklyn. A wonderful excuse to visit Patty and Rachel. The parking is frankly insane, but the fact that you can walk to so much, makes it worth the trouble. We had fabulous Thai food Sunday night at Rice Thai Kitchen in Park Slope. They have absolutely the best thai iced tea I've ever had. Addicting.

The next day, before I headed out in the morning, Patty and I walked to New Sun King for dim sum. Dim sum is not the sort of thing that works well when you are traveling alone, so I don't get to enjoy it often. I need that magical combination of three things: a restaurant that offers it during hours that I will be available, friends that are willing to try something different, and finally, I need a guide when I am at a dim sum restaurant. I can point at maybe three things that I recognize. I need that magical person that knows when to point and nod, and when to politely shake my head. Patty has told me that she found a little pocket size book that has photos and descriptions of common selections. I can't wait to have that stashed away in my bag and study it right before I enjoy dim sum again. Maybe next year I can finally become proficient with chopsticks.

Phoenix: Living In Luxury, oh yeah.

When I left the San Diego Scrapbook Expo, I was beat. Completely worn out. I had an invitation to stay with friends in a suburb of Phoenix, but I needed at least a full day to sleep first. I headed north to my usual hotel in La Mirada and slept through Sunday and most of Monday. One of the reasons I like this place is that, I can give them a wake-up call order for a day or two in advance, and in the meantime, they make sure no one even knocks on my door. OK, that and the fact that an In-N-Out drive thru is maybe a minute away. Perfect. The past weeks had been exhausting with cross country drives followed immediately with busy conventions. Once rested, I started heading back east.

Now, normally it is better if I stay at a hotel than with friends no matter how graciously they invite me. The visit is wonderful, but I have to travel with a LOT of work supplies. I then have EVEN MORE shipped in before each event, and it can pretty much take over an unsuspecting friends home. This is probably the only exception I have come across. This house has two wings. When I am staying in the east wing, the people living in the west wing are pretty much oblivious to the fact that there is anyone else around- and vice versa. Normally a wonderful thing, except when you are standing in the bathroom groggy, reaching for your jeans that you carefully laid out on the bathroom counter and discover a scorpion. I was calling for them loudly, ok...flat out screaming..., and they hardly heard me. Fortunately help arrived with a very handy shoe. Note: Always wear flip flops when in the southwest.

That was the only negative feature this house had. The kitchen alone had to be 5 times the size of mine at home. The grounds were landscaped beautifully with fountains and fruit trees. The pool, I quickly nicknamed The Vegas Pool. There was a swim up bar with cable tv and a sunken grill. Multiple waterfalls. A virtual light show of special effects. A bubble system for the entire pool. Raised tanning deck. Gorgeous rusted metal agave sculptures that became flaming showpieces above stone pedestals in the evening. So...this is how the other half lives.... Thanks guys for your hospitality. I know you wouldn't want your names used so I won't, but thanks none the less.

The convention went well. I was lucky because Cindy from the Happy Scrapper's niece Amy was in town and she helped to prepare class kits, restock product and then worked in the booth during the event. Cindy from The Happy Scrapper and I drove down together from Phoenix. Like all first year events, it was more intimate than events we generally participate in. There was plenty of time to chat with the attendees, and especially their husbands, as they stood around patiently waiting. The conversations were varied and interesting and the time passed quickly.

Cindy and I treated ourselves to our favorite Tucson restaurant on the last night. Lindsey and I both drove up loaded down with goodies for the event. We still needed to ship in extra. My sister Patty and her friend Rachel came to visit with us after the event closed. We ate at P.F. Changs Saturday night. It was delicious as always. The new thing for me was learning just a bit about sake. Rachel took the time to explain a little of the differences to me. Who knew they had sake flights these days? Always something new to learn. I'll have to try that some night when we are not already dead tired from a convention.

In the morning, we headed out to brunch at the White Dog Cafe in Philadelphia. Everything was excellent. We enjoyed bloodhounds (their well appointed version of a bloody mary); their mixed basket of scones, muffins, coffee cake and bagette; creamy roasted red pepper grits with rock shrimp, omelets and house made maple-sage sausage; and vegan breakfast burritos. Well prepared food. Complex tastes. Generous drinks. Attentive service. Warm environment. Even entertaining restrooms, don't leave without checking them out. They had vegan options for Lindsey and were dog-friendly for Nathan, Patty's daschund. For me, the best was reading their newsletter and finding out about their Take A Senior To Lunch program. I don't agree with all their political views, but this program makes me more than willing to overlook anything else.

"If you have an elderly relative or friend (age 65+) who does not have the opportunity to get out much anymore, invite him/her to lunch at the White Dog Cafe on Saturdays, and we'll take half off the check for the two of you. If you would like to find a new friend to bring, please call us and we'll arrange to link you to a homebound senior who would like to join you. To receive this discount, you must make advance reservations and mention "senior lunch". Limited number of seats and blackout dates apply."

Wow. Just wow. This is probably the best idea I have heard all year. Anywhere.

After leisurely enjoying the brunch, we headed next door to The Black Cat, a gift shop featuring handmade, recycled and free trade merchandise. So much to browse. This place is packed full. You almost can't see it all in one visit. Every nook has some new delight. I got two beaded bracelets that you roll on and off your hand. I'll be wearing them to lots of events, so you may be seeing them upclose.

Fort Lauderdale CKC

Looks like this was the last year for the CKC to be held in Fort Lauderdale. It's too bad. I finally found some wonderful help there. Precious stepped in and took care of things before I even realized they needed to be done. Thanks for indulging my Sweet Tomatoes addiction.

As if that weren't good enough, my friend Ed was in Palm Beach finishing up some business with a friend, just as I was finishing up the convention too. We had a good time walking the riverwalk area, snacking and riding the water taxi there. We even saw Johnny from E-Z Laser out walking along the river too. My advice: reconsider jumping on the water taxi for a round trip. When they say it is long, trust me, it is LONG. We were absolutely starving by the time we were finished. Thank heaven for 24 hour diners. The next day, I met his friend Chris and he introduced us to a wonderful deli. TooJay's Gourmet Deli. They have all the best stuff. Rye bread stacked high with paper thin corned beef, potato pancakes, blintzes, matzo ball soup. Just looking in the deli cases as we waited for a table, you knew it was going to be good. I will seriously miss not being back in the area to hit that deli again. They seem to have a location further north, perhaps I can stop there when I am exhibiting in Orlando or Tampa.

Buffalo: Wings, Weck and Pods

I have always joked that we make our decisions on which events to participate in based on the food available. This explains why you'll always see us at the CKC in Buffalo. There is a small place near the airport that has the best roast beef on weck I've had. Charlie The Butcher's. You order at their counter, then find a seat to wait for the best. I love this blurb from their site.

How to Eat a Roast Beef on Kummelweck:
1.Take the top off the kummelweck roll; 2.Add the sauces: au jus and horseradish; 3.Make the sandwich as sloppy and wet as you can; 4.Replace the top; 5.Eat the sandwich; 6.Use a million napkins.

Lindsey flew in to help with this event and visit friends. She's a vegan, so Charlie's was out for her. A little research on the Happy Cow.net site sent us to a wonderful, unique Italian place, Pizza Plant. We had to try one of their specialties. Pods. Pods remind me of stromboli, but these go beyond that. Check out the photo and list of options/ingredients on their link. Raisins, guacamole, sunflower seeds, tofu, to name a few. They have plenty of what I'd call more normal fillings too. Fresh mushrooms, olives, spicy sausage and lots of cheese.

Hanging out in Syracuse

After the Manchester CKC event, it seemed silly to head home, only to turn around and head back north to Buffalo for the CKC there. I spent the week getting classes ready and hanging out in Syracuse. We exhibited at the Rubber Stamp and Scrapbook Expo at the convention center there, then my sister Patty and her friend Rachel came to visit. Naturally we stayed up pretty much all night talking. When we finally woke up in the morning, we went window shopping through the amory square neighborhood, stopped for something to eat at P.J.'s Pub and Grill, and people watched as we sat on the patio out front.

Our rooms at the Renaissance had featured prints of local architecture and we wanted to see the Niagra Mohawk Power Company building in person. It was worth the hunt. The art deco style was so much more impressive in person. It's now the tiny little picture you'll see when you click on our Travel Collection category in the shop.

Here's a description from waymarking.com.

"The Niagara Mohawk Power Company building is located at 300 Erie Blvd. West in downtown Syracuse, New York. It was built in 1932 and was designed by the architectural firm of Bley & Lyman, from Buffalo, and the Syracuse architect Melvin King. The façade is constructed of gray brick and stone in a series of setbacks. It has additional cladding in stainless steel, aluminum, and black glass. The ornamentation is truly over the top, as there are parallel bands, zigzags, and chevrons. At the base of the tower six stories above the entrance, there is a 28-foot-high statue of a male figure with outstretched arms from which rays of light emanate like giant wings. The stainless steel sculpture is called, “Spirit of Light.” Niagara Mohawk gleams in the daylight and glitters at night with extensive interior lighting and powerful exterior flood light illumination. Here is a link to a YouTube video of the building taken at night: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4LXf4OgbryM&feature=related. Those of you who were in my classes knew that there was a behind the scenes family emergency. My mother had been admitted to the hospital in poor condition. Throughout the event, there were times when things looked good. Sometimes even real good. But it just wasn't to work out that way. She passed away before the show opened Saturday. Thank you to those of you who were aware of the situation and offered kind words and prayers. Thank you to those of you who weren't offended if I stepped away from helping you to take a phone call.

Specific thank you's to: Danny, Terri, Micaela, Doris, Merrilynne and everyone on the CKC road team who went out of their way to line up additional volunteers for my classes and extra staff for my booth; and to those volunteers- even though I can't remember all your names; to Shelby and Steve of Embellish It, who kept an eye on our booth and sent their own staff to fill in when I needed to step away; to Tami and Kevin of Tami Potter Designs who made arrangements to tear down, pack up and transport everything to storage in Phoenix so I could leave ASAP; to Dan and Cindi from Scrapbook Outlet for their concern and willingness to assist with that tear-down; to Nicole from Prickley Pear who came over to my hotel, very, very early on Saturday morning with just a phone call's notice to pick up the supplies from me and open the booth so I could compose myself before arriving later; and finally to all my competitors who offered a kind word, an ear, who made or signed a card and contributed. Thank you. You made a hard time a little bit better.

A Girl's Got To Eat- Columbus, OH Edition

I have some awesome vegan places to share with you from our time in Columbus. Three very different places, each one special. The first two were Lindsey's sustainance as she spent every hour at the hospital. Lindsey flew in to Columbus from a vacation weekend with an hour's notice, so until my sisters could arrive she had to make due with what the hospital provided. Slim pickings for a dedicated vegan. Normally she would travel with some snacks in her bag- just in case.

Pattycake Vegan Bakery was not too far from the hospital and soon became a favorite. Awesome cookies, raw treats, muffins and cupcakes. Very warm, friendly service and super yummy comfort foods. The cupcake pictured is their "seriously good chocolate cupcake". The carrot cake one is excellent too.

Benevolence Cafe is in the short north and farmers market area. There were daily soups and sandwiches. Packing things to-go was not a problem for them. They have a very casual, atmosphere that reminds me a bit of a time warp from the 70's. Again, comfort food.

Once things had resolved, we had some time to spend just enjoying being sisters. Now for something entirely different, fine vegan dining at the Dragonfly neo-v. Seasonal menus, fresh heirloom vegetables from their garden out back, sophisticated tastes and a creative simplicity that shows off the flavors to their best. The chef here is inspired. There's just no other way to put it. Since their menu changes, it's hard for me to tell you favorites to try. Honestly, everything was a favorite. All of the sisters ordered different things and we shared tastes of everything. I will say that this chef does amazing things with mushrooms to create calamari. Hon shemeji calamari with truffle sour cream is exquiste. This 4 star restaurant will change the way you think about vegan food forever.

The staff was attentive, but not constantly hoovering. They showed us the heirloom garden out back and the gallery space next door. They use the gallery space for special events and catering. It is so worth opening up their web page just to read the menus and see the special events they host. If you are ever in the Victorian Village area, just south of the OSU campus, this place would be a real treat.

NEW! These have five panels. The middle three have ribbon slots on both sides. The outer two panels only have the slots on one side to give you a smooth finished outer edge.

This example was made using K and Company double-sided papers and a pack of their beaded paper clips. You would just add your photos, cardstock matted if you'd like, to the patterned paper. We used mini glue dots to adhere everything. You could display photos on both sides if you wish. This style also folds up accordion style and looks sweet wrapped and tied with ribbon.

They are available right now as a blank album and we'll have kits available soon.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://livingawesome.blogspot.com/2008/04/new-accordion-acylic-albums.html' title='NEW! I love to walk down by the river and stare up at it, and I love to get that first glimpse of it as you are driving by. Now, I've seen it alot. I must pass it maybe 20 or more times a year. Most people I admit this to, will say that they like it too, but that they've seen it before, so it is no big deal anymore. Not me. My family moved often as I was growing up and I'll admit that my parents tried their best to make it seem like a good thing. Whenever time allowed, we'd stop and see sights along the way. The arch was always a milestone to look forward too. Often it meant that we would have traveled enough and would be stopping for the day soon. Usually a Holiday Inn, with a pool to look forward to. Maybe that's why it still holds the magic for me.

I so lucked out on great staff for the Creating Keepsakes Convention there. I didn't have to worry at all when I left to teach classes. My friends really came through for me. Suzanne from Eyelet Outlet had ummm, 'volunteered' her son to help the previous year, but he was smart enough to have other plans this year. She did manage to recruit her daughter's boyfriend. He was great. For someone who had no prior experience in this sort of thing and only had a 10 minute training session with me before the crowds came in, he did an awesome job of speeding you through the checkout process. Doug from Griff's Shortcuts put me in touch with Terri. Terri had worked at an area scrapbook store before it closed. She now coordinates local crops. Terri was the one coaching everyone through our make-n-take project. She was so awesome, we ran out of supplies for the project. My sincere thanks to both of you. If I'm really lucky you'll be able to do it again next year.

California Dreamin'

We tried a new show, well- new for us, in Carson, CA. The Original Rubber Stamp Convention. We were in southern California when Cindy and Ron of the Happy Scrapper asked us to share their space at this popular event. One of the best things was catching up with some people we haven't seen in ages. Tom and Vicky Breslin were there with Cut It Up. So much changes in this business that it is always nice to meet up with people who keep changing with the times and seem to be industry standards at the same time. Tom shared his famous cookies and explained how he makes them certain ways because that is how Vicky likes them. Isn't it refreshing to be around a couple that has been together for years and still cares for each other? It was for us. We left smiling. Thanks Tom and Vicky.

Rocks and Redwoods

<img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5180407758449293298" style="FLOAT: left; "Just give me your hand, and I won't let you fall", "What do you mean you three don't know where you are?" and "Are those actually harem girl outfits hanging in that gas station window?"

We wake up eager for the day's adventures. Almost immediately, we are stopped by the roadside taking photos of the haystack rocks in the ocean. Almost immediately, we realize that we are running low on batteries for the camera. A quick u-turn takes care of that and we are on the way again. Stopping what seemed like every few yards to snap more shots. As Route 101 moved away from the coast, we begin our search for elk. There are warnings posted everywhere, certainly we will see one. After miles, we came across the fella shown above just resting by the side of the road. Around another turn, we spot a meadow full of elk. We check elk off our must-see list.

Now we are in search of rocks. Not just any rocks. Agates. Not just any agates, but the ones at this Agate Beach we have heard of. We fill up with gas and find the park that is the home of Agate Beach. We pull off at the beach and walk over to the start of the trail. Sign posted saying that the end of the trail has washed away due to recent weather. Undetered, we press on. Quite a steep and slippery trail when wet, which of course it is. We admire the rocks, a little waterfall and the wildflowers on the way down. Then the end of the trail. Which is indeed, washed away.

We stand there looking at the pieces of wooden steps that remain and the large bolders seperated by way too much slippery looking mud. Content to stop at this point, we stand taking in the sights. Content until we watch a young man and his dog descend without much difficulty. If he can do it, can we? Lindsey carefully sets a path and cautiously makes her way down. Once on the beach, she runs around shouting about how beautiful it is and how the other two of us are missing out. This is where the first quote comes in..."Just give me your hand, and I won't let you fall." A split second after that, I have landed on top of her, but we have both made it back down to the sand. I turn to look back at Cindy and she is laughing, but backing away, saying that she would rather just watch us. We explore a bit and pick up a pebble as a reminder. Now, the trick is to make it back up to the car. Slow and steady- excellent advice it turns out.

We head out in search of food. It is long past breakfast time and we are starved. As we pull into Eureka, we are determined to find food and fun. The Lost Coast Brewery catches our eye and we find a side street to park. http://lostcoast.com/ What a stroke of luck. The restaurant has exactly the fun spirit we were looking for. Full of wacky decor including a giant spider that raises and lowers dangerously close to our table as patrons open and close the door. Great microbrew beers too. Lindsey and I try the Great White, Apricot Wheat, and Downtown Brown. I had a chalkboard special tuna melt with seasoned fries, Lindsey has a homemade soy burger with the fries, and Cindy orders fish and chips. Definitely worth stopping at again. Quite a hopping crowd at lunch.

Not much further and we are in Redwood territory. Yes, they are big. Bigger than you can really comprehend just looking at them. You need to always have something to compare them to in your line of vision. Unfortunately, BIG trees equal BIG shade, so you'll have to take my word for it. The photos would have been too dark. Coming out on the other side of the forest, we snap the obligatory shot of Paul Bunyon and wonder what has happened to Babe the Blue Ox's head.

Tired from the combination of hiking and lengthy driving, we start looking for a restroom and cold drinks. Rounding a bend in the road, an answer to our requests. A great shop set up by a wood carver showcasing his work in a wooded setting and offering both restrooms and drinks. The pictures can not do this place justice. This is obviously a man who has found his passion. I love it when you stumble on someone operating a business and you can't think of a single way they could improve it. What a great place to break.

Cindy has wanted to avoid telling her hubby Ron that we are taking the scenic route until we are back on Route 5. She is afraid that he will worry, so we have been a little vague. I place a call to him using my cell phone so he won't worry about not hearing from us. Where are we? "Ummm, you know I'm not exactly sure and Cindy is busy driving." Time for quote #2, "What do you mean you three don't know where you are?" "Cindy drives that route all the time, just ask her." On the spot now, Cindy honestly replies that we are fine but she can't remember right now the last town we passed by. We'll have to update him with our progress later.

Right before Ukiah, we head off on route 20 to connect with the major freeway 5 and make some better time for the rest of the trip. Route 20 is long and winds around a large lake, with often just inches between the road and the lake. Time to fill up with gas and as we pull into the station, it's time for quote #3. "Are those actually harem girl outfits hanging in that gas station window?" Yes, yes they are. Should I ever decide to change my lifestyle, I know where to get the wardrobe. And you can fill up the gas tank at the same time. Who knew? We go inside to pay and shop, but leave with only ice cream and drinks, no flimsy sequinned outfits for today.

Taking the Scenic Route

From Portland we headed south to LaMirada, CA. This was one of those great times when we have time to not rush and take in the sights along the way. Lindsey and I were traveling south with Cindy of the Happy Scrapper, and the three of us decided that we really needed to take the coastal route this time- rather than just wish we had. Three tired girls in search of adventure.

It took all we had in us to get all of our gear loaded out of the riverfront Marriott merely an hour after check-out. The amount that we have to drag from city to city as we stay on the road is enough to make you just want to go back to bed. Let's just say two luggage carts packed high and two bellmen- and that was just for us, Cindy was packed from the day before.

First minor detour. A restaurant supplier in Eugene. Stocked up with deals on a case of Torani syrups, espresso chocolates, spring roll wraps, asian noodles, wasabi, panko and an assortment of hot sauces. We try to rush through the place, pack it in a flash and head to the coast. Just before nightfall, we are able to pull off at a park and scramble up a dune trail to catch a view of the ocean. I was suprised how much this particular beach looked like it could have been on the east coast. Heading back to the car we realize how tired our legs are from that dash up the hill. We drive on, planning to stop at someplace interesting for dinner. Pick an inexpensive motel and start out again when daylight. What is the point of being on the scenic route if it is to dark to see?

We pull into Bandon-by-the-Sea and see this friendly looking restaurant, The Station. It's getting late by now, and there are no cars in the parking lot...but their open sign is lit. Do we try to stop? We are exhausted from the convention and the rush up the hill to catch the ocean before darkness. Cindy and I pull rank and determine that Lindsey is the youngest, therefore the most agile, and she is designated to get out of the car and go ask if they are still open. The manager sees her coming and meets her at the door, motioning for us all to come in. They are closing, but will be open for us.

It is one of those wonderful places with a full menu of great things, yet they have a full chalkboard listing additional choices. (As we were eating, they updated the blackboard for the breakfast crowd. It all sounded so good, we actualy discussed staying in this town just to return for breakfast in the morning.) We order an eclectic mix of whatever caught our eye, mixing breakfast items with dinner choices. Crab and shrimp omelet, veggie burger, hot chocolate, oatmeal. Home cooked goodness. Comfort food in a comforting setting. Satisfied, we stagger back to the car and switch drivers for the next stretch.

Etsian spotted at Saturday Market!

Stopped to ooooh and aaaaah over some jewelry at the Saturday Market and ended up meeting a fellow etsian, Heather Curry. She had so much more than the few earrings I'm showing here. I think the top two pair would look great with some of the pieces I saw in Anthropologie. All sorts of wonderful pieces, earrings, necklaces and bracelets. There was a freshwater pearl necklace that I still covet. She says her work is inspired by her travels. Hmmm, perhaps I can relate. Check her work out for yourself at her etsy site. She has free shipping, so you have no excuse. http://heathercurry.etsy.com/

Portland: Powell's, Raw Food, Peet's and the Saturday Market

Portland was wonderful as always. So much to see and do. So little time. We always leave with an even longer list of everything we want to do when we return.

The Creating Keepsakes Convention was busy and hectic as usual. Just a bit more frantic with UPS delivering crucial inventory to some stranger...no name or address match to the shipping label. When I was trying to get the box picked up and delivered to US instead, they had the funniest question for me. Did I know this complete random stranger in a city I only visit once a year? Seriously now...what would the odds of that be? Unfortunately, while they knew where they had incorrectly delivered the box, they were unable to retrieve the box until we were long gone. Clearly not a priority to them. Sorry to those of you who were in our classes and were looking for the acrylic albums, and those of you who were hoping for our full color assortment of the photo flip files.

Putting that behind us, we were determined to get out and have some fun on Sunday. And we did. So much fun that I think we were even more exhausted by the time we left.

We took the streetcar to Powell's. Powell's is a huge full block bookstore that is a Portland must-see. 68,000 sq. feet. 9 color coded rooms and a map to find your way. Largest independent used and new bookstore in the world. Everyday they buy aprox. 3000 used books over their counter there, aprox. 3000 people walk in and buy something, and another 3000 just browse and drink the coffee. I love the way they shelve the used books side by side with the new ones. Such an easy idea. Remember checking out the used textbooks in college? This is way better. Lindsey found some new vegan titles she had wanted, and I snagged a deal on a David Sedaris compilation.

After browsing for way too long, we headed across the street to Peet's for some coffee to go. Sipping on the coffee and nibbling on some scones, we walked the 10-12 blocks to the Saturday Market.

The Saturday Market is an outdoor art festival that takes place each weekend from March to Jan. Fortunately the weekend it started up again for the year was our weekend too. I could spend all day there. Too much to see, hear, taste and buy. Picked up a celtic CD from local group Circled By Hounds that was performing, Chasing Our Tales. Between the two of us, we left with pearl drop earrings from Garnish Yourself , handmade soaps from Rileyville Soaps, a glass necklace, sweet potatoes treats for dogs and olives. We indulged in a coconut bubble tea and an avocado smoothie as we strolled. Bubble tea is something like a slushy smoothie with large "bubbles" of black tapioca swirling around in it. You use a really wide straw and they get sucked up with the rest of the mixture.

We were hoping to hit Veganopolis for a late lunch, but a quick call for directions told us they were closed for the day. Fortunately, we were able to call Justin (Lindsey's sweetie) and he looked up another restaurant within walking distance. He coached us on the directions via cell phone as we walked. Blossoming Lotus Cafe was located in a large yoga complex "Yoga in the Pearl" and we made it just in time to order before they closed to prep for dinner. We ordered plenty and tried some of everything, boxing up the rest for our hotel room later. Everything we had was fantastic. Sunset Pate, Live Nachos (raw chips, avocado, tomato and cashew cream), Spicy Avocado Sandwich (baked tofu, avocado, chipotle aioli), and Tempeh Fajitas. The food is precisely prepared and the setting is serene. I have a feeling everything they make is fantastic. Apparently they have a larger well-regarded restaurant in Hawaii. It would be worth the trip.

Special thanks go out to Renae who joined us again this year and pitched in above and beyond to help us with the convention. Thanks, we'll be in touch and hopefully we'll see you in Seattle.

ScrapFest!

Participating in the ScrapFest in Mandeville, LA was a delight. She actually phoned her mom who does the baking to see what was vegan compatible for Lindsey. The answer... an amazing collection of scones. Apple and White Chocolate Raspberry. This place was impressive in the way it takes normal menu items that you would find anywhere, others call them comfort foods, and gives them a vegan twist. Seriously, this place could fool you. The carrot cake and brownies were amazing. Why do I always remember desert first? The Sweetheart Fries were sweet potato fries done to perfection. Crispy, not too thick, with great chipotle ranch dip. The Chill Out Wings were a winner too. I am something of a soup freak these days, so I had to try the Tortilla Soup. A thumbs up from each of us. If they ever go public and issue stock...I want it.

Cranberry Pistachio Bread

I had possibly the most amazing bread recently while in Houston, TX for the Creating Keepsakes Convention there. Made of hefty fence mending wire, these would look great so many places.

a new blog for a new year

Here we go, a new blog for a new year.
